African Cattle Egret starts its first family in Somerset

Somerset Warmer temperatures have lured an exotic African bird to breed in Britain. Experts have confirmed the first hatching of a cattle egret chick at a heronry in the Somerset Levels. The birds, which forage around herd animals, particularly wildebeest, are now regularly spotted in the South West. Mark Grantham, of the British Trust for Ornithology, said: “Now they have begun breeding, the offspring should stay in Britain, making them permanent residents.” The chick was spotted by members of Somerset Ornithological Society. Its precise location is being kept secret.
